I am happy that in High School, I took music, learned to read music, played an instrument, was in both concert and jazz bands, and learned to appreciate different genres.
I've always had music in my life. As a kid, I had Disney albums, sang into the vacuum cleaner handle, and played piano on the edge of the kitchen table. I had the Grease Soundtrack and K-Tel compilation disco albums in the 70's. As a teen in the 80's I bought my albums through the Columbia House Record & Tape Club. I would pull the speakers out of our living room stereo unit, put a pillow on the floor, turn the speakers inward and then build a fort around myself with the sofa cushions. Heaven.
I sound like my Dad when I say music made today is noise, not music. I think it was 2006 or so when I stopped digging the Top 40. I'm not into the new music. It no longer seems to be about talent. I want to listen to someone who lives for their music and who does whatever they need to make it their career, versus some kid who thinks it'd be cool to go on a reality show and become a star. Although, I will say, I like Kelly Clarkson. That girl can sing!
Take lyrics for example. Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here vs. Nicki Minaj Anaconda
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
When I hear this song on the radio, I have to stop what I'm doing, close my eyes and live it. I love it. Acoustic guitar, David Gilmour's voice...pure magic.
Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
My Anaconda don't...
My Anaconda don't...
My Anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hun
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Look at her butt (look at her butt)
Little in the middle but she got much back
Little in the middle but she got much back
Little in the middle but she got much back
Oh my God (look at her butt)
My Anaconda don't...
My Anaconda don't...
My Anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hun
(Don't don't don't) My Anaconda don't...
(Don't don't don't) Don't want none unless you got buns hun
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Oh my gosh, look at her butt
Yeah, he love this fat ass
Yeah! This one is for my bitches with a fat ass in the fucking club
I said, "Where my fat ass big bitches in the club?"
Fuck those skinny bitches,
Fuck those skinny bitches in the club
I wanna see all the big fat ass bitches in the motherfucking club, fuck you if you skinny bitches. What? Yeah!
Yeah. I got a big fat ass. Come on!
All I can say about this is....what the fuck? I have 2 young nieces and the LAST thing I want them listening to and singing along with crap lyrics like this.
On my way home, another young'un was listening to awful music on their phone without earbuds. Drives me nuts, but I'm not about to give them my bitch face & get shot.
When I got home, I needed to listen to something to replace the thumpa thumpa that was unfortunately catchy and stuck in my head.
I chose this:
I bought this DVD at BMV Books a few years ago. It is Six Movements for Orchestra, Chorus, and Soloists, recorded live at Salle Wilfred-Pelltier, Place des Arts, Montreal in Feb 2004.
The score that Howard Shore composed the the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is fantastic. Gives me goose bumps. It is music that makes me feel.
After the DVD finished, I had to of course, start watching the LOTR trilogy. Tonight I'll get through Disc 1 of 2 of the extended Fellowship of the Ring.
It's good timing, a long weekend approaches and I haven't watched all 3 in a row for awhile.

Melancholy
Today, the weather is beautiful. I had to take off my jacket on the way home. The sun is shining and there is a refreshing breeze. The temperature right now at 6:30pm is 16 degrees. I should want to put on my boots and take Crockett for a long walk. Sadly, I don't.
Melancholy has got a tight grasp on me today. I have the feeling that at any moment I will start to cry uncontrollably. It''ll probably make me feel better but I fear the post-cry headache and puffy eyes.
I feel lost. Security is a big thing for me and I don't know why, but lately I feel like I'm standing on a rug that is about to be ripped out from under me. It is a very creepy and scary feeling.
Add melancholy to these feelings and it's tough for me to want to do anything other than just sit somewhere quiet. But living where I do, there is no quiet. There is always noise. So, what I have done, while I write this is put in my ear buds and listen to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
Thank goodness for Beethoven on a day like today.

Pug and Bag Pipes
We live across the street from a Church.
Every now and then, I hear Bag Pipes.
To me they are both eerie and beautiful.
They give me goosebumps and make me feel sad all at once.
Tonight while taking Crockett for a walk, a car pulled
up and asked me where the Church was.
By the time our walk got Crockett and I close to the church,
I could hear the Bag Pipes.
The musician was standing in front of a side entrance
that had a busy stream of sweet old men in kilts
and their dolled up wives going in.
I made eye contact with a lady and asked her, very politely
and with sensitivity, if the pipes were being played
for a funeral service.
She giggled & said no, it was for a party.
I googled the chruch & they were having an event this evening.
A St. Andrew's Society Ceilidh.
Click HERE for Wilikpedia's definition of a Ceilidh.
I posted a photo of the Church from in front of our door
on my Project 365 for today.
Here is a small bit of footage I took
as Crockett seemed to be dancing a jig to the music.

Red Leather Pants
Don't ask me why, maybe because I've been listening
to the 80's station tonight, I have Loverboy's
"Workin' For The Weekend" in my head.

When I got home today from work I did the dishes, took the recycling
and garbage out, cooked Adam some chicken, hard boiled myself
some eggs for an awesome egg sandwich and took Crockett for a walk.
I'm exhausted.

A Treasure
We started off this crisp end of summer/pre-fall morning with
a bit of a sleep in.
I started making Adam an omelet that turned into scrambled eggs when it stuck to
the bottom of the pan. I had a yummy grilled cheese sandwich.
We then parted ways to sit in front of our computers.
Romantic isn't it?
I love to poke around the favorites and links on people's blogs that I like.
Via The Curious Pug, I landed on
My Girl Thursday that had links to her September sponsors that led me to
Scarlet Words where I watched this & was hooked.
I love it.
It is my new favorite song.
It's amazing that I can sit here in the corner of my tiny
bedroom in Toronto, click a few buttons, and be introduced
to a fascinating artist from Australia.

Hallelujah
Both my Dad and my Father-in-Law
sent me this Flash Mob video.
It occurred at a mall in Welland, Ontario.
I love that it is a Chorus of young and old and in between.
It made me cry.
Music makes me cry.
I have always loved and been touched by music.
I went on a Field Trip as a kid to the Montreal Symphony
and saw Peter and the Wolf and remember really feeling music for the 1st time.
In High School Concert Band, the last number would always get me teary.
The Timpani just kills me, I love it.
Peter Gabriel sings one note a way that touches my soul.
I've cried listening to Classic Radio in the kitchen while preparing supper.
I've cried at Church when the Choir sings.
I've cried at the Symphony.
I've cried at the Opera.
I've cried at the Ballet.
I've even cried while listening to a Busker play Violin at the subway station.
Then again, I cry when I watch dance, when I see art, sculptures, paintings,
photographs and when I am overwhelmed by the beauty of nature.
I think if I was to go see Cirque du Soleil or swim
with Dolphins it might kill me.
I cry when I see little old grey haired couples walking together holding hands.
These are all tears of great joy and I am so happy to be this way.
Some may say I'm oversensitive.
So be it.

Winter Wonderland
I am really looking forward to Christmas this year.
I don't know why this year I feel different, I just do.
Actually, I think I am also looking forward to snow.
I say that now, but when I have to walk home from the subway
on snow covered sidewalks I'll grumble a bit to myself I'm sure.
But then I love the feeling when you get indoors out of the cold and your
cheeks start to warm up.
I love it when it is crisp cold and the sky is so clear you can see
loads of stars, even here in the city.
I know everything seems bigger when you're a kid, but we DID
have more snowfall & accumulation when I was a kid.
We never had a snowblower.
The 2 shovels and the broom had a home on the front steps
so you could grab them as you opened the door.
Remember the time you could do that and they wouldn't get stolen?
These photos of me and my brother are from 1976.
I was 8 years old.
My snowsuit was AWESOME.
Red with a Canadian Flag badge and the zipper from neck to ankle.

I still have and still wear that white hat!
Our mittens were no doubt made by my Mom.
The snow would ball up on them and be honest, you ate it too, with bits of yarn in it.
The best was when I'd kick off my boots and my socks would be
holding on by a big toe where they'd worked their way down while outside playing.

Snow makes me think of Christmas, Christmas makes me think of music.
I love Christmas Carols.
I sing them all year round when I'm waiting for the bus and am sure that
no one can hear me. Winter Wonderland is a staple.
I am going to spend some time making a Christmas Carol Playlist so that
my blog will be accompanied by Christmas Carols for the entire
month of December.
Can't wait!
